NESA WORKSHOP AGENDA (March/April 2012)

What is Injecting Drama?

So what is Injecting Drama? It is my small way to give back. As a theater educator and a teaching artist I have a set of skills that I feel can help teachers find that spark that led them to education in the first place. As a former student I have a chance to influence the way that teachers teach and classrooms run - empowering teachers to take that risk and try something new in their classroom (even if it may not be on the districts prescribed curriculum). Injecting Drama is simply a way to use drama and theater exercises in the mainstream classes (sometimes called core classes) to engage students, gear them up for the content learning, inspire teachers and remind that school can be fun.

Below is an article that highlights the power of theater and drama for kids of all learning styles. This article, along with others, help to paint a picture of why I feel it is important to not separate the creativity of drama from the general education classroom.

In a nutshell, here is what I hope to achieve with this workshop or session that you are participating in....

THE GOALS OF INJECTING DRAMA!
  • Improve student learning and meet standards using DramA
  • Increase literacy both physical and intellectual
  • Build tolerance and understanding using drama
  • Provide opportunities for building self-confidence and engagement
  • Allow students to learn and demonstrate kinesthetically
  • Inject your lessons and classroom with a boost of energy and spontaneity (and yes make you that "cool teacher")

Making the Decision To Inject Drama

You chose the workshop, you participated and now you want to know if you have what it takes to Inject Drama! You should consider the following four points before you begin, because nothing is worse than promising the kids that you will be incorporating new things into their day only to stop doing it because it isn't working.

  • Knowledge of the school curriculum and your discipline
    • The more you know what it is that you are required to teach, the easier it is to Inject Drama.

  • Facilities
    • What spaces are available to you? Any open-ish space will do. You can even get by without space for many of the exercises.
    • What limitations do you have (or think you have)? Time?
    • What is the target audience for integration?

  • Skill level of students
    • Choosing the appropriate materials for your age range. This is highly important - review the material first.
    • What is their background and experience?
